What Does the Pastor Do?

“The pastor teaches, though he must solicit his own classes.

He heals, though without pills or knife.

He is sometimes a lawyer, often a social worker, something of an editor, a bit of a philosopher and entertainer, a salesman, a decorative piece for public functions, and he is supposed to be a scholar.

He visits the sick, marries people, buries the dead, labors to console those who sorrow and to admonish those who sin, and tries to stay sweet when chided for not doing his duty.

He plans programs, appoints committees when he can get them, spends considerable time in keeping people out of each other’s hair; between times he prepares a sermon and preaches it on Sunday to those who don’t happen to have any other engagement.

Then on Monday he smiles when some jovial chap roars, ‘What a job—one day a week!’”

Get the Most from Your Bible

I am happy to share with you this quote from F.B. Meyer:

“Read your Bible – not as a newspaper, but as a letter from home.

If a cluster of heavenly fruit hangs within reach, gather it.

If a promise lies upon the page as a blank check, cash it.

If a prayer is recorded, appropriate it and launch it as a feathered arrow from the bow of your desire.

If a truth is revealed in all its intrinsic splendor, entreat that its brilliance may ever irradiate the hemisphere of your life like a star.

Entwine the climbing creepers of holy desire round the latticework of Scripture. So will you come to say with the Psalmist, “O how I love thy law! It is my meditation of all the day” (Ps. 119:97)”

My Friend Bozie

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Daniel 12:4

My last several posts have been personally nostalgic. Surely, I have been blessed by good friends that have made a significant difference in my life.

Allow me to share with you about my dear friend and co-laborer in Christ, Dr. Ronald “Bozie” Fullerton. I met Dr. Fullerton in 1978 when Ruthi and I were moving to Portland, Oregon. At the time he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of El Sobrante, California. Under his capable leadership that dear church grew from an attendance of 40 to more than 800 and in eight and one-half years baptized more than 1,000 people. Dr. Fullerton has been a leader in Southern Baptist and California Baptist life.

However, of all of Dr. Fullerton’s accomplishments the one that has impacted me the most is his consistent and persistent soul winning. He led his fast growing evangelistic church by personal example. He was and is a daily soul winning practitioner. His leadership and ministry are a wonderful example for any pastor to emulate. Truly, he has lived out the testimony of Daniel 12:4.

Dr. Fullerton has made me a more effective soul winner by his active example. He has been a constant encouragement to me. I am grateful for the influence he has wielded in my life and very thankful that Dr. Fullerton is my friend.
